Vertical Helix Size Guide

Close-up of an ear wearing Crystal Heaven London’s SOLEIA Vertical Helix Cartilage Stud.

Finding your perfect vertical helix piercing size depends on a couple of factors:

  • Your individual anatomy - everyone's ears are different so the size you need will be based on your skin thickness and ear shape. Unfortunately body jewellery isn't universal, so what works for one person may not necessarily work for you.
  • Your piercing placement - a vertical helix is pierced vertically through the fold of cartilage above the rook at the top of the ear. As everyone is different, not everyone has this fold of skin, so whether you can get a vertical helix piercing is anatomy dependent.

Recommended Jewellery Sizes
- Gauge: 16g (1.2mm)
- Bar Length: 4mm - 6mm
- Inner Diameter: 5mm - 6mm

Cartilage Hoops
A Cartilage Hoop for a vertical helix is usually quite small, averaging around 6mm inner diameter but this is dependent on your anatomy. If you like wearing a dainty charm from your hoop, then you may want a slightly looser hoop so that it allows the charm to dangle.

Cartilage Studs
The fold of cartilage a vertical helix is pierced through tends to be quite thin, so usually you will need a short bar ranging from 4mm to 6mm. The most common style of cartilage studs hang from a labret with a curved bar that is hidden under the fold of cartilage so that only the hanging parts are visible, giving the illusion that they are floating from the ear. The Soleia Vertical Helix Cartilage Stud is one of our bestsellers.

It's usually a process of trial and error to find your perfect fit, however we always recommend visiting your local piercing studio who carried out your piercing as they will be able to measure your ear and offer some professional advice.
