Helix Size Guide

Close-up of an ear with gold earrings, chains, and a Teardrop Crystal Charm - Rose Quartz by Crystal Heaven London.

Finding your perfect helix piercing size depends on a couple of factors:

  • Your individual anatomy - everyone's ears are different so the diameter you need will be based on your skin thickness and ear shape. Unfortunately body jewellery isn't universal, so what works for one person may not necessarily work for you.
  • Your piercing placement - a helix can be pierced at different heights on your ear cartilage, we refer to these as low helix, mid helix and high helix. These variations can all have different sizing requirements, especially if you have thicker or thinner skin in certain areas. If your piercing is closer to the edge of the ear this can be the biggest factor to take into consideration when choosing the correct hoop diameter for you.

Recommended Jewellery Sizes
- Gauge: 16g (1.2mm)
- Bar Length: 6mm - 8mm
- Inner Diameter for low to mid helix: 5mm - 8mm
- Inner Diameter for high helix: 8mm - 12mm

Cartilage Hoops
A Cartilage Hoop can be worn in a helix piercing once it has fully healed. If your piercing is closer to the edge of the ear and you like a snug fitting hoop, then a smaller inner diameter such as 6mm or 8mm will be best for you. Always make sure there is at least 1-2mm space between your skin and the jewellery otherwise a hoop which is too small can cause discomfort and irritation.

Cartilage Studs
A helix is typically one of the first cartilage piercings most people get and Cartilage Studs with a flat-back are commonly worn. For a short and snug fit, we recommend a 6mm length, if you have thicker cartilage or prefer to leave a bit of space either side then an 8mm may be better suited.

It's usually a process of trial and error to find your perfect fit, however we always recommend visiting your local piercing studio who carried out your piercing as they will be able to measure your ear and offer some professional advice.
