Forward Helix Piercing Guide

An ear featuring a range of gold and diamond earrings, like hoops, studs, and the HAVANA Slim Starburst Huggie Hoop by Crystal Heaven London, adorned with chain-linked starburst details to showcase diverse piercings.

Finding your perfect forward helix piercing size depends on a couple of factors:

  • Your individual anatomy - everyone's ears are different so the diameter you need will be based on your skin thickness and ear shape. Unfortunately body jewellery isn't universal, so what works for one person may not necessarily work for you.
  • Your piercing placement - a forward helix piercing is found on the fold of cartilage above the tragus which is thicker towards the bottom and thinner higher up, so the bar length or inner diameter required can vary on the exact location.

Recommended Jewellery Sizes
- Gauge: 16g (1.2mm)
- Bar Length: 5mm - 8mm
- Inner Diameter: 5mm - 8mm

Cartilage Hoops
The inner diameter needed for a forward helix is usually around 6mm as the piercing is typically not too far from the edge of the ear. If you prefer a snug fit, you may find a 5mm is better suited.

Cartilage Studs
The bar length needed is typically quite short for a healed forward helix piercing as the cartilage is usually quite thin, however this will be dependent on your anatomy. In our experience, 6mm tends to be a good starting point. Most of our Cartilage Hoops are available in 16 gauge and 18 gauge with a range of inner diameters ranging from 5mm to 8mm. As there is limited space at the back of a forward helix piercing, a flat-back is perfect for this placement because it sits flush against the skin.

It's usually a process of trial and error to find your perfect fit, however we always recommend visiting your local piercing studio who carried out your piercing as they will be able to measure your ear and offer some professional advice.
