Conch Size Guide

Finding your perfect conch hoop size depends on a couple of factors:

  •  Individual anatomy: Everyones ears are different so the diameter you need will be based on your skin thickness and ear shape. Unfortunately body jewellery isn't universal, so what works for one person may not necessarily work for you.
  • Piercing placement: A conch piercing can pierced either closer to the edge of the ear for wearing a hoop or further in the centre for a labret, so this can be the biggest factor to take into consideration when choosing the correct size for your conch piercing.

Recommended sizes

Gauge 16g (1.2mm)
Bar length for labret/barbell 6mm - 8mm
Inner diameter for hoops 10mm - 14mm

What size hoop do I need for my conch?

Generally conch rings range from 10mm upwards, sometimes as large as 14mm. Those with smaller ears or with a conch pierced closer to the edge of the ear may need a 10mm for a tighter fit. Ideally, you want the hoop to be comfortable but snug, with little movement or drooping.

What bar length do I need for my conch?

If you prefer wearing a flat-back labret in your conch piercing, the bar length you need will depend on your cartilage thickness, however 6mm or 8mm generally works for most people.

What jewellery is best for a conch piercing?

You can wear either a hoop or a stud in your conch piercing. It should measure 16 gauge and be a suitable style that is comfortable and skin-friendly. A conch hoop is normally pierced with a 16g flat-back stud with a longer bar to allow for swelling, once this swelling subsides you will need to downsize the bar to a shorter length to help with the healing process.

The jewellery you choose should be made of a high quality metal and flat-back studs should be either internally threaded or threadless.

Cartilage Hoops are perfect for conch piercings or if you're a sparkle lover, the Angel Cartilage Hoop is a great option. Both hoops are available in 10mm, 11mm and 12mm.
Prefer wearing a stud in your conch piercing? Threadless Cartilage Studs are hypoallergenic and waterproof, so you can wear your jewellery 24/7 without any risk of tarnishing.

Can I wear a normal earring in my conch piercing?

A normal earring such as a butterfly back has a thinner post than the jewellery a conch is typically pierced with. To avoid your piercing hole from shrinking it's best to avoid wearing a normal earring in your conch piercing and continue wearing 16 gauge jewellery as recommended by professional piercers.

When can I wear a hoop in my conch piercing?

A conch piercing made with a needle is typically pierced with a flat-back stud for healing, it should never be pierced with a hoop. Once your piercing is fully healed which can take between 9 - 12 months, you can wear a hoop in your conch piercing if it's comfortable for you. If you change to a hoop too soon, this can prolong the healing process so it's not recommended.

Is a hoop or stud better for a conch piercing?

You can wear either a hoop or stud in your conch piercing, it comes down to personal preference. While both are suitable options, many people prefer wearing a stud for comfort and practicality. It's important to ensure your piercing is fully healed before wearing a hoop, whereas you can wear a stud while healing and when your piercing is fully healed.

It's a process of trial and error to find your perfect fit, however we always recommend visiting your local piercing studio who will be able to measure your ear and offer professional advice.
