What is a gauge in piercing?
The 'gauge' is a term used in piercing which refers to the thickness of the bar that goes through the piercing hole. The larger the number, the thicker the size - for example 16g is thicker than 20g.
What gauge is standard for cartilage piercings?
A cartilage piercing such as a helix, tragus or conch is typically pierced with a 16 gauge needle with 16 gauge initial jewellery fitted for the healing process. A piercing needle creates a slit in the skin which then creates a hole which stretches to allow space for the jewellery.
How do I know what gauge my piercing is?
If your piercing was made with a needle by a professional piercer, it's likely your piercing will be the standard 16 gauge which is common for most cartilage piercings including helix, tragus, conch, rook or forward helix.
Why can't I fit 16 gauge earrings in my piercing?
The reason why you may not be able to fit 16 gauge earrings in your piercing is because your piercing hole simply isn't wide enough for the 16 gauge jewellery. If you were pierced with a 16g needle but removed the jewellery and started wearing thinner earrings, this will cause your piercing hole to shrink down to the size of the earring being worn.
Can I wear 16 gauge earrings if my piercing hole is too thin?
Yes, it's possible to wear 16g earrings but you will need to stretch your piercing first. It's advised to use a labret taper to gradually make the hole larger.
Do you have any thinner cartilage earrings?
Yes, our new Threadless Cartilage Studs are compatible with our spare threadless bars which are available in thinner gauges, including 18 gauge and 20 gauge. This means you don't have to stretch your piercing to wear beautiful cartilage earrings.
